Lolita's Personality

They can be extremely loud, despite their adoration for their mate. They can also be a nuisance for those living nearby. They can be heard making ear-splitting screeches and loud calls that can be annoying to those who live in apartments or condos.
Another interesting trait of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, which means males and females are hard to distinguish. Due to this the only way to reliably determine sex is through DNA testing. Once the bird's sex is known the breeding process can begin.

Lolita's Care
For years activists have been lobbying for the retirement of Lolita's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 movie Free Willy sparked public outrage over the returning of orca Keiko into the wild, those who fought for her hoped that Lolita would suffer a similar fate. Sadly, she never had the chance to return to the ocean.
The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinary doctor and continue to put her in danger. They undermine her health by making her perform for tourists, and over-exerting her with high-speed circles and head-first dives that expose her to chlorine, making her lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. Additionally, they place her in an incredibly small tank that is only one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.
In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita an aunt of theirs, vowed to work on a plan with a group of Lolita supporters known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to move her eventually to open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen on the west coast of Washington where she could spend the remaining days receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and be was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.
If the plan had been implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) might still be alive today. In the wild killer whales are extremely social animals that are bonded with family members until they die. Lolita, who has lived in a solitary space at Seaquarium in a cage for 40 years, is being released into the wild. People from all over the country have demanded Lolita's release from Seaquarium and then release into the wild. These activists include Ric O'Barry, a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they offer their killer whales, particularly Lolita. The orca, who was 57 years old, was taken away from Puget Sound, Washington, in the year 1970. Although the species is endangered living in a tank that some consider to be too small.
Lolita's Health

It is not known what health issues are plaguing the orca, as her captor is not required to share this information. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies taken from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease often plays an important factor in the death of orcas kept in captivity.
Despite these ongoing health concerns Many are hopeful that Lolita could be closer to a life in the wild than before. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has made it clear that he will work to move the whale from her tank into her home waters in the Pacific.
The move comes following years of public pressure and demands, including from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary where she can swim in the ocean and even meet the orca believed to be her mother. Unfortunately the plans came too late for the beloved whale, who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney issue.
